Violet Bent Backwards in the Grass, by Lana Del Rey

A pop star’s pocket to poetry.

I am uncertain on how well known it is that Lana Del Ray has a book of poetry out, I came across it through a customer’s recommendation and was intrigued by the writing and it’s cover. Violet Bent Backwards in the Grass, is a beautiful hardback with a painted image of oranges hanging from a tree. The paper is textured, like the kind from an old book, with a yellow tinge, always written in typewriter font. The book features scribbled annotations from Del Ray as well as grainy film photography. So, you can tell the writer has money to throw at this publication. For a debut collection it holds small lines of beautiful writing, and I think has potential to write some wonderful work. The best of her book was definitely her haikus, the longer poems lacked structure, whilst the haikus were small lines of brilliance. The frustration here is money, no other poet could release a first book like this and it is just the way it goes that Lana Del Ray can. I like to think that one day she would set up a foundation to support upcoming underfunded poets, but realistically, she’s just going to release another Art Pop album.

If you like the lyrical works of Lana Del Rey or 2020 Taylor Swift, this is the collection for you.
